1) Nagahama no Hiroshi

Start your evening with some pork-wrapped vegetable rolls! Then share your dreams with a master who lives for the yatai life.

Our first stop is Nagahama no Hiroshi, where you'll be greeted by the owner, Hiroshi Inoue, with his infectious catchphrase: ""Yatai are the best!"" Inoue is originally from Kyoto. While working for a food company, he was transferred to Fukuoka, where he quickly fell in love with the local yatai culture. After becoming a regular customer and honing his skills by helping out at his favorite stall, he fulfilled his dream of opening his own yatai in 2023.

Popular with travelers, Inoue strives to make his yatai the highlight of every guest's trip. There is always a buzz of laughter, making it easy for complete strangers to strike up a conversation.

The secret bond at this stall is the "Dream Notebook," where guests write down their goals or wishes, and Inoue personally replies to each one.

Many guests return to report their successes, and depending on  the scale of the dream achieved, Inoue celebrates by treating them to a free pork-wrapped lettuce roll or a complimentary drink!"

Many return to report their success and depending on the scale of the dream achieved, Inoue will celebrate with a free lettuce wrap skewer or a complimentary drink!

Must-try item: Pork-Wrapped Lettuce Roll

Start with a light dish from their popular menu: tightly packed domestic lettuce wrapped in juicy pork belly and grilled to smoky perfection. The contrast between the crunchy lettuce and the savory pork is incredible. To top it off, Inoue adds a signature splash of mustard and writes a Japanese character. Alternatively, he can customise it to spell out a word of your choice. You can also enjoy seasonal vegetable rolls, so be sure to ask about the daily specials.

While we were enjoying our meal, the owner suggested where we should go next. “Why don’t you try Hakata Baribari? Go and say ‘Play ball.’ with the baseball-loving owner!” To find out what that meant, we headed to the next yatai: Hakata Baribari.

2) Hakata Baribari

Let’s all shout “Play ball!” together. Immerse yourself in the warm and welcoming hospitality of Fukuoka at the yatai stall.

As you approach, you will hear the lively sounds of a baseball broadcast filling the air. Wearing his Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks uniform, the owner, Takahiro Matsukiyo, welcomes you. A huge Hawks fan, he moved to Fukuoka from Osaka in 2017. On game days, you can enjoy food and drinks while watching the game on his tablet. Nagamaha yatai area is also the closest to the MIZUHO PayPay Dome Fukuoka, and on game days, many fans of the opposing team stop by too.Once you find yourself sitting next to someone at a stall, the barriers between the teams you support disappear. Baseball fans and non-fans alike naturally strike up lively conversations.

This stall used to be affectionately known as Nagahama Shimin Kyujyo (Nagahama Municipal Baseball Stadium), but as it was thought that non-baseball fans might find it hard to get into, the name was changed to Hakata Baribari for a one-year trial period starting last October. “We plan to change the name again for next year’s opening,” he says with a smile. “As the yatai stall grows, we’d like to give it a name that reflects a bigger stadium.”

As you'd expect from a stall overflowing with a love of baseball, the staff shout "Play ball!" instead of "Cheers!" and "Game set!" when you ask for the bill.

It's just like a gratin! Enjoy this creamy potato salad.

At the second yatai, we ordered a dish that pairs well with a light drink. The owner recommends the Baked Potato Macaroni Salad with Cheese. This potato salad is mixed with macaroni, topped with cheese, and lightly seared with a blowtorch until fragrant. The result is a creamy, melt-in-the-mouth texture that is reminiscent of a gratin. Bite-sized gyoza are also a popular choice to accompany drinks. With a crispy, aromatic exterior and a juicy meat filling that bursts with flavor, they’re so delicious that you’ll want to eat one after another.

"The Nagahama yatai street is a place where people naturally get along. You can experience the unique atmosphere of the yatai and the sea breeze feels great too. There are lots of unique yatai, so be sure to check them out.” With that, Matsukiyo recommended our next stop: Mentaiko Chudoku. He told us that he and the owner had started running their stalls at the same time and have become good friends. “They have lots of unique menu items, which I find really interesting. Be sure to try their famous mentaiko dishes.” Having heard the owner’s recommendation, we went to the next stall.

3) Mentaiko Chudoku

A specialty food stall born out of a love for mentaiko. Come and savor Fukuoka’s famous and innovative gourmet dishes!

Our third yatai is Mentaiko Chudoku, Fukuoka’s only yatai specializing in mentaiko (spicy cod roe). Frequently featured in the media, it’s a popular spot with long lines on weekends. The owner, Tatsuji Yonemitsu, is originally from Kumamoto Prefecture. He was first drawn to the charm of yatai while working part-time at one during his college days in Fukuoka, which inspired him to dive into the yatai world.

“I think of yatai not so much as restaurants, but as ‘tourist attractions’,” says Yonemitsu. “The close proximity to customers and the natural conversations that arise on the spot are what make yatai unique. We have many visitors from overseas, and I find it rewarding to show them the charm of Fukuoka first-hand. At yatai, it’s not just about the food, customer service is also important. I strive to create an atmosphere that makes people want to come back.” Also, the owner continues to refine both his cooking and service through trial and error.

A must-try: Cream Cheese and Mentaiko! A perfect match!

"The reason we chose mentaiko as the star ingredient was our desire to 'share my beloved Fukuoka mentaiko with the world',”says the owner. The signature dish is the Mentaiko Tororo Pot. It’s a dish packed with mentaiko, meat and vegetables are generously topped with grated yam mixed with mentaiko, and then finished with savory, grilled mentaiko. The menu also features other dishes that let you fully savor the appeal of mentaiko, such as the Mentaiko Dashimaki Tamago, where the saltiness of the mentaiko pairs perfectly with a fluffy omelet, and the Akaoni Mentaiko Yaki Ramen, sweet-and-spicy stir-fried ramen noodles.

Using three different types of mentaiko depending on the dish is another of Yonemitsu’s signature touches. “Mentaiko is a versatile ingredient that pairs well with both Japanese and Western cuisine,” he says. “I design our menu so that we live up to our name as a ‘mentaiko specialty shop.’”

At the third yatai on our tour, we ordered a stylish dish from among the many unique menu items. The owner’s recommendation was the Baked Avocado with Mentaiko and Cream Cheese. This dish features avocado topped with cream cheese and mentaiko, lightly seared with a blowtorch until fragrant, and finished with a drizzle of olive oil. It pairs perfectly with drinks!

Our yatai-hopping was coming to an end. “It’s a great idea to wrap things up with a simple drink at Nagahama Tamachan Bekkan. The owner has a unique personality, and the place has plenty of regulars. I often go there myself on days off.” Guided by those words, we headed to the last stop.

4) Yatai no Tamachan Bekkan (Annex)

Experience a traditional yatai run by a lively local owner. What better way to end your night in Nagahama than with some ramen?

The Nagahama area is also the birthplace of Nagahama ramen. A night of hopping from stall to stall should naturally end with ramen. The grand finale is Yatai no Tamachan Bekkan. Daisaku Kida, the owner, who is known for his long, braided mustache, will welcome you with a smile.

Among the diverse stalls lining Nagahama yatai street, this one truly captures the authentic spirit of yatai culture. With a carefully crafted menu of three classics-ramen, oden(Japanese hot pot), and yakitori (grilled chicken skewers)-, it is the ultimate destination for anyone looking to end their night with a perfect bowl of ramen.

This ramen, which is made using only pork bones that have been slowly simmered, is the perfect way to end your night.

The signature tonkotsu ramen is made using only pork bones, which are simmered in a pressure cooker to create a smooth, milky-white broth that is free from any unpleasant odours. The thick-cut, homemade grilled pork is very satisfying to eat and locks in the rich umami flavour of the meat. It pairs perfectly with the broth. The half-size portion is ideal for those who say, "I'm full, but I still want ramen."

Each yakitori skewer is carefully grilled to perfection, and the oden is infused with the mild flavour of flying fish stock. “Nagahama Yatai is a very cozy place,” says Kida. “Even if you come alone, you’ll naturally strike up a conversation with the person next to you. The public restrooms in the area are well-maintained, so please feel free to relax and enjoy yourself at yatai street.” Why not wrap up your yatai hopping by enjoying a traditional bowl of ramen while soaking in the sea breeze of Nagahama and the warm, welcoming atmosphere unique to these yatai?
