Ohori/Ropponmatsu Area | OtherTove and the Moomins Exhibition: In Search of Something Special
Dates:04 Jul 2026 - 30 Aug 2026
This exhibit will feature the work of Tove Jansson (1914~2001), the artist, caricaturist, comic illustrator, picture book writer, and novelist responsible for the popular series Moomin.
Starting from her early oil painting period, the exhibit covers her caricature work both before, during, and after World War II, sketches and original art from her Moomin series, as well as 300 of items associated with her that help viewers to understand her deeply idiosyncratic inner world. There will also be plenty of art from Moomin that will be presented to better help viewers understand her life as she crafted the series.
Visitors can get up close to the world of Moomin and its characters, and even see many of lesser-known murals that Tove painted as well. We hope you will take the opportunity to learn more about the Moomin series and the inexhaustible well of creativity that inspired Tove to create her art.
Highlights
1.The artistic world of Tove Jansson
Tove’s artistic aspirations began from a young age, with several of her pieces featuring in magazines from this period. During the restoration period following World War II, murals she painted would come to decorate the walls of town halls, hospitals, nursing schools, and other public facilities.
It was in the midst of World War II that Tove turned to art to find a haven from the cruel realities of the world around her when she began penning the Moomin novels. Today they comprise a total of 9 different volumes from 1945 to 1970.
It was during the fierce fighting of 1945 that Tove turned to art to find a haven from the war that Europe was embroiled in. In 1945 she wrote Moomin, the first novel in a series that would run for 9 volumes until 1970. Both the story and illustrations inside the novels were created by Tove, and the good reception led to a newspaper comic strip and picture books, giving the series a worldwide appeal. In her 50s she began penning novels intended for an adult audience as well.

2.Moomin and Friends

In addition to the novels, Moomin comics, the picture book The Dangerous Journey, and character sketches will all be featured in the exhibit. Wall murals on public facilities will also be featured.
The over 250 pieces on display of Moomin and friends show them in a wide variety of situations for you to encounter them in!

3.A place where you can immerse yourself the world of Moomin
Illustrations in the Moomin novels, and Tove’s wall mural art will also be on display in the museum.
The exhibit will feature the mural Fairy Tale Panorama created for a daycare center and featuring the Moomins, as a life-size video image spanning approximately 7 meters across both panels.

There will also be art from the Moomin novels on display as well in a life-sized video format that will allow you to immerse yourself in the world of the characters.
